Taraji P. Henson Brings Awareness to Mental Health

Recent attention has been brought to the fact that there is an aspect of adolescent mental health that is often ignored. According to Taraji P. Henson, who serves as a self-appointed ambassador for juvenile mental health, African American youth often experience race-based educational bias (People, 2021). This is closely connected to the fact that these young people commonly receive harsher punishments from school administrators for disciplinary measures. When this occurs, it not only amplifies the school to prison pipeline, but it also makes African American youth feel they are unworthy of empathy, compassion, and/or leniency (People, 2021).

As a result of this continuing trend, Henson feels African American youth develop anxiety, depression, and a desire to practice social isolation. To prevent adding to reduced mental health in this population, it is encouraged that educational institutions not criminalize actions beyond the measures given to the peers. To assist with this, Henson launched the Unspoken Curriculum. This is a mental health education initiative that addresses persistent psychological risks faced by young black students in the education system (People, 2021). The 6-week program seeks to identity, define, and increase understanding of the existence of race-based educational bias (ABC News, 2021).

With celebrities like Taraji P. Henson joining the fight to save African American youth, average individuals should also feel empowered to evoke. Citizens can rally parents to reach out to school administrators and superintendents through letters and emails to ensure these children are shown kindness, grace, and consideration (ABC News, 2021). They can also enroll youth in the Unspoken Curriculum or similar mental health education programs. This can increase their ability to deal with external and internal stressors in an acceptable and healthy fashion. Overall, the goal is for the nation to join the prevention of criminalizing African American youth in educational institutions (ABC News, 2021). What are your thoughts on ways schools can assist with good mental health for young African American students?

Your Hair Your Health

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Black women have an intricate emotional attachment to their hair. This inclination stems from the aspects of what hair represents to them. In most cases, it is not taken just as an extension of parts of the body, but as a reflection of one’s moods. For most Black women, hair is a symbol of identity. Foundationally, it provides bearings to identify as a strong individual with a critical cultural background. To most individuals from this population segment, hair is a treasure that cannot be ignored. As such, care and attention are given to ensure that it signifies something relevant that runs much deeper.

In the context of appreciating their beauty, most Black women consider their hair an extension of their physical outlook. Thus, it represents an intricate aspect regarding their emotional well-being. Often, hair is taken as part of expressing one’s mental state. It is considered a direct mirror of a Black woman’s mood (Vice Media Group, 2022). The perfectly made hair is perceived as a revelation of one’s happiness and state of pride in who she is and represents. Among Black women, hair is viewed as a connecting element (Vice Media Group, 2022). It brings women together to share their experiences and perspectives concerning society. Therefore, hair’s relevance transcends its aesthetical value.

The time Black women take to wash and care for their hair symbolizes its criticality and the reason behind the emotional attachment. Despite the amount of time required to make it perfect, most Black women do not mind. This inclination is based on hair being a representation of the ancient hairstyles and rituals imported from Africa, and some developed in varied locations following slavery. As such, when Black women braid their hair, they feel an emotional connection to their ancestral past. Thus, based on the above reasons, hair remains a relevant part of Black women’s existence.

Supporting HBCUs to overcome historic underfunding

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Photo by Ron Lach on Pexels.com

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have a history in the United States of being underfunded due to varied underlying factors. One of the reasons may the history of systematic inequities. In other words, the discriminatory practices prevalent during the history of the United States, may still impact Black institutions today. Throughout the history of HBCUs, the principal mission has been to education the African American population. Since HBCUs have been tied to the Black population, they are often on the receiving end concerning limited funds allocation (Bagasra et al., 2022). Over time, this issue has caused chronic state underinvestment in HBCUs. Thus, such institutions continue to suffer from a lack of critical funds to run operations.

Additionally, lower alumni contribution is a factor in the continued underfunding of HBCUs. However, this issue is also linked to the socioeconomic position of many African-Americans within the United States. For example, most HBCU alumni earn less when compared to their White college graduate counterparts (Bagasra et al., 2022). This situation creates a gap in the level of contributions that Black alumni from HBCUs can make to advance the institutions. The amount of Black wealth in the United States is comparatively lower. As such, it cannot provide the needed funding to advance the functionality of HBCUs. The current situation in the country, whereby Blacks have limited economic opportunities, further perpetuates the financial circumstances of HBCUs (Bagasra et al., 2022).

Despite the financial pressures experienced by many HBCUs, can be increased through the adoption of critical best practices. For example, a public-private partnership can be encouraged to increase funding sources for institutions. The creation of greater awareness regarding this initiative will advance contributions toward the improvement of HBCUs (Jones et al., 2017). Moreover, greater advocacy for equity at the state and federal level can lead to changes in policies that provide greater support to HBCUs. Improved educational experiences may lead to advancements in African-American capital, which in turn would allow for alumni to give back to their HBCUs. This is why all African Americans should consider contacting (i.e., tweet, email, letters, phone calls, etc.) their state and federal representative and government leaders advocate for more HBCU funding. Check out this link for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to learn more and advocate. Share your advocacy story with us in the comments section or on Facebook.

Birmingham’s Mayor Wants to Shelter the Homeless

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Birmingham’s mayor, Randall Woodfin recognizes the need for shelters for the homeless people. This leader has proposed building structures that would house individuals without homes. It is an idea that is intended to improve safety for homeless people. Additionally, it may provide leverage for advanced care for vulnerable individuals in Birmingham.

Working toward fulfilling the needs of disadvantaged individuals should be at the core of any leader. Mayor Woodfin demonstrates a critical undertaking by proposing the construction of shelters for homeless people. Once actualized, this plan will create a path for a safe space to sleep. A foundational aspect of the proposal is that Birmingham Mayor Woodfin recognizes the underlying suffering among homeless individuals (WVTM 13, 2023). This stance is a life-changing proposal for the city and the United States. Thus, being at the forefront in vouching for the plan signifies a promising incentive toward developing safe living for the vulnerable population.

Even though the homeless individuals will get prefabricated tiny homes, the move by Woodfin represents an improvement for the vulnerable population. This initiative will create a path for learning that will improve the situations of the affected people in Birmingham. Whereas the plan for purchasing the prefabricated houses has not been approved, the proposal highlights care for the homeless residents (Associated Press, 2023). It also shows increased awareness of the best approaches among the city’s leadership to take steps to remedy challenges. From a critical perspective, Woodfin provides insights that should be emulated by other mayors across the U.S. Their active stance in such an initiative will spare the U.S. the homelessness issue. What benefits do you think assisting the cities homeless could provide?

Are Diabetes Medications the Solution To Weight Loss?

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Photo by Olia Danilevich on Pexels.com

The use of diabetes medication for weight loss is a growing trend among people facing obesity risks. A drug called semaglutide is used to help individuals manage their body mass. Based on existing studies, this medication is effective for weight loss. Its criticality is also based on limiting the development of type 2 diabetes (Singh et al., 2021). Patients receiving a dose of semaglutide medication have a higher chance of maintaining a desirable body mass index. Thus, the use of diabetes medications provides leverage for weight loss. This efficacy also makes it possible to mitigate the development and effects tied to type 2 diabetes. Therefore, the medication is a critical intervention for weight-related risk factors.

Even though diabetes medications such as semaglutide and liraglutide have positive effects on weight loss, they have negative implications. For example, their use curbs cravings for certain foods critical for relevant nutrients. The medications also lead to side effects like diarrhea and bloating (Singh et al., 2021). These issues may limit the achievement of the desired life quality. As such, there is a need to consider the reduction of side effects tied to diabetes medications. This stance would increase their efficacy in the advancement of weight loss. Thus, the interventions instigate the limitation of obesity-related issues that may reduce one’s quality of life.

Based on the review of existing studies, diabetes medication for weight loss is effective in mitigating weight-related issues. They also protect against the development of type 2 diabetes among at-risk populations (Singh et al., 2021). Thus, drugs, such as semaglutide, are instrumental to be applied in the weight loss process. They are effective in handling the risk of obesity and diabetes. Despite their side effects, the positive aspects are immense. Therefore, diabetes medication should be used to promote weight loss among at-risk patients.

Got a Tension Headache? Here Are A Few Ways To Relieve It!

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Photo by SHVETS production on Pexels.com

Tension headaches affect the overall well-being of a person. The provision of interventions that relieve them advances the quality of life. One common way to relieve tension headaches is by using painkillers. (Hassan & Asaad, 2020). Medication is the first choice since it relieves pain. Physical exercises, such as yoga, provide leverage for the relaxation of the body, which can help to relieve tension headaches (Hassan & Asaad, 2020). Massages are also used to loosen tension in the head and neck muscles. This intervention is necessary because it stretches tight and shortened muscles, which aids in releasing tension in the head.

Other intervention measures that can be used to advance the relief of tension headaches include getting adequate sleep, using cold ice packs, etc. Changing sleep habits can help limit the experience of sleep apnea or insomnia. Cold packs can also be placed on the head to reduce tension headaches (Hassan & Asaad, 2020). The cooling effect reduces pain and minimizes headaches. If an individual has a tension headache, they are encouraged to stay at home and avoid taxing activities. They would also provide leverage for long-term quality health since they limit the experience of pain.

The application of non-evidence-based intervention measures may also relieve tension headaches. One relevant suggestion is to avoid stressful situations. The probability of having tension headaches are higher when we are stressed, or in noisy environments. That risk decreases when surroundings are conductive. In turn, calm environments are guaranteed to relieve tension headaches.

Do You Know How to Communicate Effectively?

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Photo by SHVETS production on Pexels.com

Effective communication greatly influences people’s day-to-day relationships. However, many individuals pay little attention to elements like tone, voice, and non-verbal expressions that allow one to communicate efficiently. Oftentimes, people forget that communication is a two-way activity involving speaking and listening. How people communicate influences the quality of relationships in marriages, friendships, and the workplace.

People must communicate effectively in all their encounters to handle conflicts better and develop self-awareness. Effective communication allows individuals to manage disagreements better in all relationships at personal and professional levels by enabling a person to understand both sides of the problem (Touitou, 2020). Many conflicts often result from miscommunications or failure to hear the other person’s viewpoint. Nevertheless, allowing everyone to explain their view makes it easy to prevent disagreements. In addition, it creates self-awareness as one learns to become more attentive and understanding. In short, practicing effective communication allows people to recognize their emotions and how they impact the communication process.

A person can practice effective communication through active listening, paying attention to body language, and focusing on clarity. Active listening allows one to show the other party their interest in the conversation and can be practiced by asking relevant questions about a topic. Paying attention to body language enables one to understand non-verbal cues. Lastly, a speaker should be clear and concise to avoid confusion. These strategies have been put in place to help individuals become effective communicators within friendships, relationships and the workplace.

Damar Hamlin and the Injury Seen Around the Nation

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Figure 1 Photo Credit: Damar Hamlin Instagram Account @d.ham3 (2023).

Damar Hamlin is a name that might not have been known to many before January 02, 2023. However, now, Hamlin’s name is associated with one of the biggest news stories of 2023 when the nation waited on a health update and prayed for a positive outcome given his health condition. According to Devon Markham of News Nation, Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills collapsed on the field mid-game after a defensive tackle. Following the play, Hamlin lost consciousness and received CPR from medical personnel for nine minutes. Most notably, Journalist Devon Markham shares assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington used a defibrillator during the process and successfully resuscitated Hamlin as he lay lifeless on the field. He was immediately put into an ambulance and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

For days afterwards, fans held vigils waiting for updates. Hamlin transitioned from relying on a breathing tube to 100% breathing on his own and showing significant neurological recovery. He also began speaking and acknowledging teammates, family, and friends. Hamlin was eventually released from the hospital in Cincinnati, OH and transported to his home in Buffalo, NY.

As many were relieved to hear of Mr. Hamlin’s progress, the circumstances of his history raised questions about the severity of hits taken by NFL players. A review of history shows there have been numerous players to experience similar life-threatening injuries. Markham recorded the experience of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier in December of 2017, when he suffered a spinal contusion that left him temporarily paralyzed. In December of 2011, Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox took a major hit that ended his career. Also, September 2007, Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett was temporarily paralyzed after a hit which also ended his career.

Conversations have taken place about the disability pay received by players. Several people feel more of their contract should be paid out if they experience a life-threatening encounter. Fans may empathize with the players’ expending health and money, far exceeding the contributions made by the league to the players. As such, it is important for the public to advocate for change. NFL policies and perhaps federal legislations may be necessary to hold the NFL more responsible for the health problems of the current and former players. Specifically, the government should introduce a health policy to the NFL that regulates their assessment and treatment of player injuries. Also, part of the millions made by the league should be used to advocate for a health fund used for players with a diversity of NFL related injuries.

Furthermore, steps should be taken to reduce the power the league has over medical professionals, determinations, and overall outcomes. While fans enjoy the fun and excitement players provide, they must also fight to protect their favorite players from various health implications and unfair outcomes. Lastly, fans of the league can flood the #NFL on all social media platforms to express their grievances, concerns, and suggestions. This would increase awareness that the public has expectations that should be addressed along with the players.

Brittney Griner and Russian Prison Release

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Credit: Britney Griner Instagram

The release of Brittney Griner from Russian imprisonment garnered a great deal of attention from around the nation. Brittney Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA athlete that was detained at a Russian airport in 2022. Russian officials accused Griner of being in possession of CBD cartridges which is illegal in the country. However, 10 months after being sentenced to nine years in prison, she is back on America soil thanks to a highly controversial prison swap. As such, her homecoming is both joy-filled and packed with the reality of possible lifelong mental health implications.

CNN Reporters Salahieh and Yan shared Griner was held in an imprisonment camp for women that provided beds insufficient for a small child. Standing six feet nine inches tall, this was one component of her captivity that prevented her from getting sleep. Additionally, the camp forced women to sew as a form of intensive labor. However, Griner was too tall to sit at the tables and her hands were too large for the sewing machines. As a last resort, she was assigned to carrying the fabric used to create various garments. Most notably, Griner was forced to cut her signature locs which nearly reached her waistline. This was considered necessary since Griner could not dry her hair in the frigid temperatures of Russia and constantly battled the flu and pneumonia from exposed, wet hair. Along with these inconveniences, there were numerous aspects of the experience that would cause Griner to need the professional help of a therapist to strengthen her mental state.

As such, it is highly recommended that Griner and her loved ones that have been a part of the journey receive psychological counseling to address any emergent issues. Acknowledging being imprisoned in another country, serving as a political pawn for world leaders, being deemed unworthy for a prisoner swap, and being separated from family; it is imperative that Griner gets the supports she may need. Griner and her family may need to unpack the difficulties of being detained in another country, serving in a penal colony, and dealing with the anxiety of release. This can be achieved in individual counseling, group counseling, and trauma therapy. All parties can also join online support groups, perform community service, and connect with or advocate for Americans still in captivity.

Have you been impacted by a traumatic event? Was your family also impacted? Be encouraged and seek support for yourself and your family. For resources in your community, use the FindTreatment.gov to find the closest treatment location.

Is cosmetic surgery worth it?

By Terrie Johnson | UAB Community Health & Human Services Intern

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Plastic surgery, also commonly referred to as cosmetic surgery, is increasing in popularity throughout the United States. This practice can be defined as trying to uniquely enhance one’s physical appearance by undergoing surgical or medical procedures. According to Theunissen Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Baton Rouge, some of the most frequently received plastic surgery requests are for nose enhancements, breast augmentations, and butt enlargements. Additionally, people often make surgical changes to their cheekbones, stomach area, and arms. Individuals are spending thousands, and sometimes having multiple surgeries, to look younger, more attractive, and socially appealing, often at great risk. The prevalence of butt injections has resulted in numerous deaths with several individuals being incarcerated for illegally providing them. For example, journalist Adriana Diaz of the Daily Mail wrote about the case of Maxine Messam of Bridgeport, New York, who died after receiving botched injections and being driven to the hospital unconscious.

Theunissen Aesthetic Plastic Surgery warns there are repercussions people far too often overlook. While the obvious benefits of altering one’s individual look can be achieved, undergoing plastic surgery procedures can lead to major health issues. This may include developing bacterial infections, having surgical complications, and/or experiencing unforeseen illnesses. Also, some candidates for surgery may be high risk for problems due to their current health state while others may encounter lasting scars, viruses, and/or a diversity of other lifetime consequences.

As such, it is highly suggested people explore healthier alternatives before seeking plastic surgery. If not, there can be significant psychological issues that accompany any operations. Specifically, Michael Reilly and Karen Parsa of Psychology Today warn people that they may develop body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This is a mental illness individuals develop after becoming addicted to plastic surgery. People with this issue are obsessive in their thinking or compulsive in their actions. Additionally, researchers Randy and Lori Sansone of Psychiatry (Edgmont) found there is a stark rise in patients of primary care physicians and mental health professionals that have undergone cosmetic surgery. These individuals are often at a higher risk for suicide, BDD, and other psychiatric comorbidities. However, there are healthy ways of preventing these mental illnesses. The most beneficial steps individuals can take is to work on their self-esteem and level of confidence.

Comprehensively, Melissa Dittmann from the American Psychological Association (APA) states, it is imperative more psychologists start to evaluate issues related to cosmetic surgery. The importance arises from a major increase in popularity of cosmetic surgery and a rise in the number of people dissatisfied with their appearance and body image.” As such, it is not advantageous to try to keep up with societal norms and magazine standards for beauty. These industries use manipulation tactics to alter the appearance of models, actors, and tv personalities in a way that does not align with their natural state. This makes it important for people to know what they see is not real. Instead, we should embrace our own beauty and not allow society to make them feel less than. Still, for people that choose to pursue plastic surgery for other reasons, it is important to do research on the procedure and the professionals performing it. Per, Theunissen Aesthetic Plastic Surgery following all post-op care orders to prevent complications, infections, or life-long difficulties is imperative.
